My fave 14 shows on Netflix (2019)

Just for you, I share here my favorite shows I watched on Netflix in 2019. No particular order, just great shows to add to your list if you haven’t watched them yet!

Anne with an E

CATEGORY: Feel good serie, Drama

STORYLINE on IMDB: The adventures of a young orphan girl living in the late 19th century. Follow Anne as she learns to navigate her new life on Prince Edward Island, in this new take on L.M. Montgomery’s classic novels.

WHY I LOVED IT: When I was younger, I watched ALLLLL the serie Anne of Green Gables on tv. I love this story so much..

A couple years ago, when they decided to have a remake of Anne, I was thrilled! This new version of Anne is brilliant, all thanks to the cast (Amybeth McNulty – Anne – is soooo good.. but so are the actors playing Marilla, Diana, Jerry and oh… Gilbert Blythe!! <3 )

The romantic universe of our favorite red hair orphan is magical, and her fierce, strong and feminist personality captured me from the first minutes..

The downside: I can’t believe they decided to cancel the production after season 3! People are pissed about it and I understand why!

STYLE: Feel good serie, Comedy, Drama

STORYLINE on IMDB: Sam, an 18-year-old on the autism spectrum, decides it’s time to find a girlfriend, a journey that sets Sam’s mom on her own life-changing path as her son seeks more independence.

WHY I LOVED IT: The endearing Atypical characters, the new faces, various topics addressed in this serie (marriage and adultery, the independance of young adults dealing with autism, bisexuality, forgiveness, friendship…)

STYLE: Binge watching, Comedy, Drama

STORYLINE on IMDB: A look at the personal and professional lives of a group of women who perform for a wrestling organization in Los Angeles during the 1980s.

WHY I LOVED IT: Bold colors, eighties style and music, every character is sooo funny and different, and because of the diversity of this show.

GLOW (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling) is not a documentary about wrestling. It’s a show based on a real tv serie that aired between 1986 and 1990.

This serie starts when a mediocre movie producer has to create a TV show about women wrestlers, and post an ad find his main actresses. Various women answered, but nobody knows anything about wrestling, and they all have to figure it out if they want to keep their job. From building their stage character and creating their costume with a low budget to learning basic wrestling moves, we follow the ladies into their personnal battles.

It took a little time before I started to watch this serie and I must say, I binge watched every season of GLOW in a day or two. I don’t remember why it took me so long to start it, but now I’m hooked!

I have to tell you though, the third season is going is going in every direction at once. I watched it all and I liked it, but when I looked back, I realized they started some things and never came back to it.. (Debbie’s anorexic episode..??)

La casa de papel (Money Heist)

STYLE: Action, Crime, plot twists

STORYLINE on IMDB: A group of unique robbers assault the Factory of Moneda and Timbre to carry out the most perfect robbery in the history of Spain and take home 2.4 billion euros.

WHY I LOVED IT: This was my favorite serie this year! Again, it took me some time to start watching this serie, but I binge-watched its three seasons in a couple days!

The plot twists in this show are amazing. The professor’s plan for the robbery, the details.. I cannot wait for season 4 to arrive !!!

La casa de papel has an international success. Made in Spain in 2017, this serie is available in Spanish (with or without english subtible), English or French.

ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR LIST if you haven’t already.

Raising Dion

STORYLINE on IMDB: A widowed single mom discovers that her son has super powers and tries to figure out how to raise him safely and responsibly.

WHY I LOVED IT: It was nice to see a kid, trying to understand his powers and what to do with them. And this kid is so freakin’cute!!

In this superhero serie, Dion is a kid and discovers he has powers. He doesn’t know why he has powers and what he can do with them, but with the help of his mom and his Godfather (played by Alisha Wainright and the yummy Jason Ritter), he will find answers to his questions.

Also, Michael B Jordan plays his deceased father in flahsbacks and moments here and there.. <3

Russian Doll

STYLE: Adventure, comedy, drama

STORYLINE on IMDB: On Nadia’s 36th birthday she is struck by a car and killed, only to finds herself alive and well, back at her own birthday party earlier that night. When she dies again and her timeline resets, Nadia begins to question her own sanity as she strives to unravel the mystery of why and how this is all happening.

WHY I LOVED IT: This show was created by Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler. It reminded me the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, but in New York City, with the dark humor of Natasha Lyonne.

I watched it all in an evening-night. 🙂

Stranger Things

STYLE: Fantasy, Horror, Drama

STORYLINE on IMDB: When a young boy disappears, his mother, a police chief, and his friends must confront terrifying supernatural forces in order to get him back.

WHY I LOVED IT: If you haven’t watched Stranger Things, it’s probably because you just woke up from a long coma. Everybody knows this serie based in the 80’s, about a group of kids trying to fight evil alongside Eleven.

Why is it on this list? Because season 3 (which came out in 2019) was the best one so far. The last episode killed me.

The O.A.

STYLE: Drama, Fantasy, Mystery

STORYLINE on IMDB: Having gone missing seven years ago, the previously blind Prairie returns home, now in her twenties with her sight restored. While many believe she is a miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous.

WHY I LOVED IT: This serie is soooo strange!! It’s hard to understand (season 2, I still wonder if I got it all..) it goes back and forth, it’s on parallel universes (yep, plural!) but it’s soooooo good!

Season 1 got me hooked. Season 2 was the hard one to understand but I loved it as well. I will start it over again soon..

The Sinner

STYLE: Crime, Drama, Mystery

STORYLINE on IMDB: Follows the story of a young woman who commits a horrific act of violence and rage, and to her surprise, has no idea why. The investigator who becomes obsessed with the case is determined to dig into her past and figure out why this is happening.

WHY I LOVED IT: This show was another of my great discoveries in 2019. The character played by Jessica Biel is so complexe.. I really, REALLY loved how the investigation unravels and the finale… everything falls into place and we can see the whole picture.

Season 1 was definitely my favorite. Season 2, we follow the same detective for another completely different investigation. Still a great season, but nothing compares to the first season.

The Umbrella Academy

STYLE: Action, Adventure, Comedy

STORYLINE on IMDB: On the same day in October 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by Sir Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire industrialist, who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. But not everything went according to plan. In their teenage years, the family fractured and the team disbanded. Now, the six surviving thirty-something members reunite upon the news of Hargreeves’ passing. Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Vanya and Number Five work together to solve a mystery surrounding their father’s death. But the estranged family once again begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse.

WHY I LOVED IT: It reminded me a lot of X Men movies. But the characters are funny and lovable, and the story was soooo good!

Season 2 is coming in 2020 !!

Don’t f*ck with cats: Hunting of an internet killer

STYLE: Documentary, Crime, Mystery

STORYLINE on IMDB: A group of online justice seekers track down a guy who posted a video of him killing kittens.

WHY I LOVED IT: I remember the Rocco Magnotta saga very well. It took place in Montreal, and it was everywhere in the news..

I wasn’t sure if I would be able to watch it, because I get very sensitive when animal cruelty is involved, but as many viewers told me, the documentary doesn’t show anything violent. Sometimes I just closed my eyes when they were showing kittens (just in case) but I continued to listen.

This documentary was really interesting. They focus on how people on the internet decided to work together and find the kitten killer, because at this time the police was not interested.. until he decided to kill something way bigger than kittens.

This documentary has 3 episodes, and wait until the end.. everything connects together and we find out this killer wasn’t stupid at all. He was a very well organized killer who got caught before he could kill some more..

STYLE: Documentary, Inspiring

STORYLINE on IMDB: Medical docuseries focusing on patients with unique illnesses and their journeys to find a diagnosis and cure.

WHY I LOVED IT: If you followed Dr. House on TV a couple years ago, you will love this docu-serie! In fact, Lisa Sanders, the doctor behind this show, was a medical consultant on House! She wrote a medical column in called Diagnosis in the New York Times, where she had a great following of doctors and medical students all over the world.

Dr. Sanders decided to find people on Earth who were not able to get a diagnosis for their condition, then reach to her followers to try to find if someone on the planet has seen similar conditions, to help those patients.

Again, they show us here that Internet can be used to help people in need. When we put our knowledge together and work with each other, we can achieve great things.

Watch this!

Who killed little Gregory

STYLE: Documentary, Crime

STORYLINE on IMDB: When their 4-year-old son is murdered, a young couple fights a twisting and arduous battle trying to identify a frustratingly elusive killer.

WHY I LOVED IT: This story has so many intrigues.. An unknown caller harassing people from the same family, death threats, wrong accusations, lies, journalists involved in the case, judge who is not here to help..

I was shocked to see how this investigation went wrong on so many levels.

The movies that made us

STYLE: Documentary

STORYLINE on IMDB: The histories of classic popular movies are examined.

WHY I LOVED IT: Those movies are among my favorites: Die Hard, Ghostbusters, Home Alone and Dirty Dancing.

I knew about some behind-the-scene facts from those movies, but they really go deep on how hard it was to sell the idea of those movies, how people believe those movies would be marketing flops, and well.. the gossips between the actors.

I was shocked to see how they built the Home Alone house in a school gymnasium, how Bruce Willis was perceived as an actor BEFORE Die Hard, and how hard it was for the GhostBuster movie to shoot!
